Deer Isle, Maine

"Barred Island Preserve," Deer Isle, Painting by Beth Whitney | DowneastWatercolors.com

"Barred Island Preserve" is an original Maine watercolor painting by Beth Whitney.

The Barred Island Preserve at Crockett's Cove on Deer Isle is one of my favorite places to walk and look for sea glass. The hike is fun, meandering through deep Tolkienesque terrain with dense forest, massive rocks, trees, lush moss, streams, ferns, ahhh. Head through the woods and then you get glimpses of the beach and water beyond.

The best part is the sand bar between the beach and Barred Island, which gives you access to the island's rocky shore. Sometimes eagles nest on the island, so you can't cross over, but you can still enjoy the beach and hopping around on the rocks. Just around the bend are some wonderful rocks for watching the surf crash and lobster boats checking their traps.

My Seascapes Gallery has more paintings of Deer Isle and other beautiful New England coastal locations.

My favorite thing is looking for sea glass on the beach, but I'm dying to take a kayak out around Crockett's Cove.

This original watercolor painting includes a classic double white archival mat and backing board in a crystal clear protective closure sleeve. It's ready to slip into a standard 12x16" frame (not included).

Paintings make thoughtful gifts to celebrate special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, or birthdays. They are also a wonderful way to remember a favorite vacation with family and friends.
